  1. Hi everyone,
This is where you post your comments. Remember to first type up what you want to say and then copy and paste into the comment box. That way you won't lose any material and you'll have a running log through the semester. We'll talk more about this in class.

  2. Hi Everyone,

Let me introduce myself. I'm Alana, a Science student working in a double minor program in psychology and chemistry. This is my last term in SFU (if everything goes smoothly). I'm also a part-time undergraduate researcher in the 4D research labs of SFU. My favourite hobby is playing the piano and browsing the internet. I have taken several education courses and they have all been very interesting, and I'm sure this one (Educ 252) will also be enjoyable. I'm looking forward to learning lots in this class and to getting to know everyone.
    Cheers,
    Alana

  3. Hi everyone,

I'm Amy as I have introduced myself in class. I am majoring in the faculty of business and is in my forth and final year. I have taken a few education classes before in SFU which I enjoy very much and that is why I took this class! =)

My favorite book would have to be Harry Potter's series but I also love anything by Steven King. I think being a deep reflective thinker and educator means to be open up and think outside the box; to appreciate, understand, and accept others' differences. I enjoy reading "Along the Frontage Road" in class yesterday and my favorite part would be how the father realized at the end that his own pain is not the only one, others may experience more pain/tragedy in life than he can imagine. If you open up and look outside you will feel less stress out and more open minded about everything in life. I often feel stressed out managing full time class at SFU and doing three days of work per week at the same time, but when you talk to others and understand their situtations you will see a different perspective. For example my partner Charlie in class she tooked 5 courses this semester also working part time as well. I feel everyone have their own stress in life but they are coping it and persuing their dreams and that gives me the strength to keep going to reach my own goals in life and never give up.

  5. Hello everyone!

I’m Bowie. I am a second year communication students and also thinking of minor in education. I am not so sure about my future career yet >.<; therefore I hope I will figure it out soon. In my leisure time, I would usually go out with friends and tries to discover restaurants with delicious food! During Saturday mornings, I used to volunteer as a student teacher in a Chinese School that I used to attended; however, the school closed lately, so I have nothing to do in Saturday mornings anymore>.<.
I am taking this course because I have taken a few 200 level education courses and felt that education courses are very interesting courses to take! The course that really motivated me to continue to take education course is Edu 240. I took this course last year, and realized that I was able to learn a lot by taking my own school experience and apply to situations that surround us. This is the reason I chose this class and I am hoping to learn more in this reflective practice class to improve on my knowledge!

    Bowie ^.^

  6. Hi Everyone
My name is Jenna, I am a thrid year student here at SFU. Im interested in becoming a primary school teacher, preferably with the younger grades, k-3, I love working with children. Im also doing a history minor. Originally I was planning on doing french, but my love for history overshadowed that. I am from Toronto, and moved out here for a change, and it is quite different. I have taken many education courses, and was told that 252 was required, which is why I am taking it, although I also think it will be a resourceful and insightful class.

  7. Hi everybody!!!

My name is Olivia, this is my last semester in SFU hopefully! My major is General Studies in Art and minor Educational Psychology. I love working with children and I always try to find different ways to teach children that can make them learn at the same time have fun. I want my students love going to school and make everyday memorable for them when they look back in the future.
I am a busy person I know because I am part time teaching piano and music theory and I LOVE music theory. I don't know why I just have so much motivation about that. If you have any questions about music theory feel free to ask me I will try my best to answer you!
My favorite movie is "Up" (2009) and "The Parent Trap" (1998), I love story that is romantic and more into family type. I love watching movies more than reading books, however, some story books require lots of imagination which are good because I always have my own feeling and meaning of understand books.
I am looking forward in Educ 252 because it seems interesting to me, especially open discussion with no right or wrong answer. Hope to meet you all around! Nice to know you all!

  8. Hi everyone,

My name is Alicia, and this is my first year at SFU. I am currently in the General Studies program focusing on Education. I completed two years at Douglas College before coming up here and am still finding my way around this enormous place! My goal is to eventually become an elementary school teacher, unless something else catches my interest along the way. I have only taken online education classes and look forward to experiencing my first in class education course.

  9. Hi fellow classmates! My name is Tony. I am a 3rd year BGS of Education student completing a double minor (Learning Disabilities & History). I hope to gain admission to law school and eventually work as a Crown Prosecutor – or to complete my PDP and work with elementary school children. This blog entry will explain why I am excited about our class.

Speaking with Sue, I learned that we will be delving into areas of moral reflection, which is of great interest to me. I have spent most of my adult life in fields of work involving consideration of right from wrong. After high school, working with people who had various developmental disabilities, I discovered several things. First, the reaction of the public to these people (the reaction of ‘good’ people - law abiding, hard working, tax paying) was often to show disdain, discomfort, rudeness or ignorance. While this was not always the case, my belief in a common morality began to crumble. I began to perceive that instead of right and wrong or good and bad, there are shades in between.

This impression culminated when I worked as a provincial Sheriff in Alberta. In that position, I observed people convicted of heinous crimes often showed more morality and genuine concern for the well being of others than the fellow Sheriffs who I worked with. I often saw unscrupulous behavior in my coworkers as they took advantage of their powers. I will have be considering those experiences along with others in my journal and blog entries.

I hope to teach children to accept and be open to the thoughts and feelings of others regardless of outward appearance or previously applied labels; to affect the beliefs children have about themselves and others in a manner which results in the lifelong reward of valuing owns own life and others’.

  10. Hi everyone.

My name is Harpreet and I am a third year student hoping to enter the business program by September. I am not sure what field I want to enter but I was thinking somewhere along the lines of marketing or financing. I have taken one education class which I enjoyed quite a bit so I decided to take another, thinking that I might enjoy this one as well. Also, the previous education class, Education 100, had taught me many life skills that I would never have encountered in any of my business classes. I hope that this class provides me with some lifelong lessons like the previous has.

  11. Hello Everyone!

My name is Lindsay and I am in my third year with the hopes of becoming a grade 10,11, or 12 history teacher. For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a teacher, and I have recently started coaching a basketball team too. Along with my interests with History, I love to travel and went to Europe for a couple weeks in May. I hope to get into the International Practicum Program, or to go teach in another country after I complete PDP. I have taken a few education classes in the past semesters, and thoroughly enjoyed them. I am also taking Education 240 this semester (Social Issues in Education). I hope that my experiences while travelling and the knowledge learned in the classes while at SFU will allow me to become a more successful educator.

  12. Hi everyone!
My name is Steff and I am in my fourth year. I played college basketball for my first two years of post secondary and have been at SFU for the last three. I am getting my bachelor of general studies in education and double minoring in Early Childhood Education and Physical Education. I have always considered becoming a teacher so I started volunteering in a grade one classroom three years ago. While sitting and working with a six year old, I had an "aha moment" realizing that teaching is definitely something I want to pursue. Since that time I have realized that I absolutely love working with young children so I am really looking forward to teaching at the elementary level.
Sports have been a major part of my life from early on and have shaped me into the person I am today. Because sports have had such a major impact on my life I'd like to give kids the chance to have the same positive experiences that I did. I currently coach grade six girls volleyball as well as grade nine girls basketball and I hope coaching will be a big part of my teaching experience.
Not only have sports shaped my life they've also destroyed my knee recently. After major knee surgery this summer I had plenty of time to reflect while in a brace that immobilized me from hip to ankle. I hope all that "reflecting" I did on the things I couldn't do or had to learn to do differently will have been good practice for this course (Ha Ha). This experience also gave me a greater appreciation for people living with physical disability.
I'm excited to take this course and can't wait to meet you all!

  13. Hello Everyone,

My name is Manvir, and I am a third year History major, with a concentration in African History. Throughout the course of my educational experience here at SFU, I have developed a genuine interest for the cultures, traditions and values of various tribes and peoples from the African continent. With regard to my long-term career goals, I am hoping to get into research that deals exclusively with the effects/influence the Soviet Union exerted upon the countries’ of Angola and Mozambique during the Cold War era. Sometime in the coming future, I plan on traveling to a few South African nations, such as Angola, Mozambique, and South Africa in order to experience first hand, the rich cultural dynamics and traditions of the countries I am currently studying.

For quite some time I have been interested in the field of education and academia and would eventually love to become an educator/instructor myself. I currently volunteer in what has been deemed an “inner-city” elementary school, and there I work with young children around the ages of 8-9 years old, many of whom come from disadvantaged and troubled backgrounds. Having received the opportunity to interact with and work one-on-one with these children, I can honestly conclude that my perspective on education and the role of institutionalized schooling has drastically changed. For after working with children who come from under-privileged households, I have come to the realization that some (perhaps most) school curriculums and agendas are designed specifically to serve the affluent members of society while failing to recognize the needs of the less wealthy. My experiences at this school have ignited and fueled my desires to pursue a career in this field and work toward creating an educational system that does not discriminate based on one’s social status and societal ranking, but rather a system that offers equal educational opportunities to individuals from all walks of life.

Good luck to everyone this semester, and I hope we can all gain some valuable insight and knowledge throughout the semester that will benefit both our personal lives and the decisions we make for our future careers as well!

  14. Hi Everyone,

I am a third year student, Majoring in World Literature and Minoring in English/History; I am also interested in attaining my Masters in Education. My favorite book is The Catcher In the Rye, not only because it is wonderfully written but also because it is the first book that intrigued my love for literature now. I have always been interested in Law more specifically human rights pertaining to children and education. But it was not until 11th grade; because of one of the most awesome teachers I have had, that I became interested in Education as a career more specifically becoming a teacher. I have had the wonderful experience of working with “under privileged” children the past two years; and that experience has made it clear that becoming a high school teacher is what I want to do. Along side teaching, I am also interested in writing and would some day love to write something of my own. I am hoping by taking this class not only will it help me with the career path that I would like to peruse but also introduce me to different concepts of reading, thinking and writing.

  15. Hello Everyone,

My name is Amanda. I am an English major, undeclared, and I am not sure if I am going to minor in Education or Linguistics. I am a second year student at SFU and I want to be an Elementary school teacher in the future. I want to teach the younger grades, preferably grade 3 or 4. Currently, I am a nanny for two boys, who are 4 years old and 6 years old. I have been at this job for over 3 years now, and I love it! I also watch a lot of movies and I enjoy kickboxing. I have taken three other Education courses before this one, and this one seems quite different, but I am excited to see what it will entail. The Education courses I have taken before were all very interesting and helpful, especially my Educational Assessment class, so I am sure this one will be useful as well!

  17. Hi folks.
I find myself between my third and 20th year of post secondary education. I have studied at a music conservatory, at the University of Alberta and at Indiana University. I have spent 15 years as a touring musician, as an artist, and as a care attendant for adults with developmental disability and/or physical disability. This is my third semester at SFU. I am working towards a general studies degree and plan to enter PDP as a primary school instructor.
I play trumpet, am a private instructor and school music clinician part time. I record and produce music. Also, I work for a man with muscular dystrophy, who has had a tracheotomy, and breathes with a ventilator.
This is my second education class. The first was the philosophy of education, which was the most exciting and thoughtful class I’ve ever taken.
I am looking forward to the readings and engaging, hopefully, in thoughtful discussions with all of you.

  18. Hey guys, my name is Kevan, I am a third year student at SFU. I’m majoring in criminology and I plan to do a minor in history. However, most of the courses that I have taken always have something to do with the social sciences, because that is what interests me. This is the first time that I have taken an education course. Recently, I have thought about the possibility of teaching in the future, and I thought this course would be somewhat of an introduction to me. I thought this course would be interesting to take because I can get some ideas and insights on the different concepts on education in general.

Besides having some interest in teaching, I would like to have a career in criminology. I have not exactly decided what to do yet, but policing and law is what interests me the most at the moment. My favourite movie is Rush Hour. I thought it was a great action packed comedy. Currently, my favourite book is “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown. I thought it was a great book that discussed great facts and mystery.

  19. Hello fellow students!
My name is Nurani and this is my first semester at SFU. Previous to this I completed three and a half years at Douglas College and earned my Associate of Arts Degree. I am now pursuing the Bachelor of General Studies degree in Education and will be doing a double minor probably in Counselling and Human Development, and Curriculum and Instruction. As a child I always wanted to be a teacher until I hit high school, when my ideas changed drastically. I adore literature and almost majored in English with a minor in Philosophy. Eventually, after graduating from high school, I got a job in the Burnaby school district at a before and after school care center and remembered why I wanted to be a teacher so much. So here I am, thinking that if I had just gone with my first choice as a child from the beginning, I would have saved myself a lot of time and money! I have been volunteering in a grade 5/6 classroom since September and I absolutely love it. I hope to teach somewhere in the range of grades 4-6 and maybe get a position as an on-call EA before then.

  21. Hey guys and gals!

My name is Nathalie and I am a first year student! I am currently trying to major in French and minor in physical education.

Ever since grade 5, I’ve wanted to become a primary French-immersion teacher. We will see where my studies take me in the next few years:)

Being straight out of high school, I find everything about university so new, so fresh! I am so excited to start fresh and enjoy what Simon Fraser has to offer. I look forward to obtaining teaching skills of how to apply reflective practice among younger students.

My hobbies are playing a vast variety of sports such as hockey, soccer, snowboarding and football. Planet Earth is currently my favourite movies series! My top favourite books are 1984, Macbeth and How to Kill a Mockingbird.

  22. Hi Everyone,

My name is Fiona and I am a fourth year student here at SFU. I was previously working towards a major in History, but have decided to the switch to a BGS in Education with a double minor in Curriculum and Instruction and History. This is my first year back at SFU in almost two years after going through what I like to refer to as my quarter life crisis! In the last two years I have spent time traveling Australia, working and volunteering in an elementary school. After finishing my degree I hope to enter into the PDP program here at SFU for September 2011.

My interest in teaching began when I started volunteering in an elementary school after I graduated. My job at the school was to provide extra help to students in the classroom who were having difficulties grasping various topics and subjects. After working with children form grades K to 7 I have discovered that I want to teach at the primary level either in kindergarten or grade 2. I have taken many education classes so far at SFU and I have learned a variety of different things from each class, and I’m confident that this class will be as knowledgeable as the others!

I hope you all have a wonderful semester!

  23. Hey Everyone,

My Name is Alaina and I’m a third year and am planning on going into elementary music education. Right now I’m working on a degree in communications with a minor in music, and then I plan to hopefully enter into PDP and get a Bachelor’s of Education with a minor in disability education.

  24. Hello!

My name is Selina and I am currently in my second year at SFU. I plan on completing a double major in English and Communication studies, and going on to teach secondary students. I also wish to pursue writing in the future, which I became passionate about after reading the first Harry Potter book! I have always been fascinated by children’s literature, with my favourite authors being Shel Silverstein and Dr.Seuss. The Giving Tree remains one of my favourite stories today, and never seems to stop taking on new meanings.

This is the first education class I have taken, and I chose this particular one as I was drawn to the idea of studying reflective practice. I hope by the end of this semester I will have acquired some insight as to how my personal experiences shape my outlook on certain issues, primarily literature. In addition, by studying texts from various sources, I anticipate how the knowledge I gain from this course will affect and guide me through particular practices. Hopefully, this class will motivate me to use my own reflective thinking to engage in a literary piece more thoroughly, and at the same time, examine where my opinions stem from.

  26. Hi everyone, I'm Stephanie.
I graduated from SFU in October with a degree in English and my favourite part of getting this degree was having the opportunity to study old and medieval english.
I recently decided to apply for the PDP program in hopes of eventually teaching high school english and I'm taking this course for the education credits and because the online description looked pretty interesting.
I love to read and some of my favourites include Jane Eyre, the Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake, and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. When it comes to television and movies, I have a sad addiction to sci-fi and I'm desperate to see Avatar. I also write poetry and volunteer in a school library in my spare time.

  27. Hi everyone,
My name is Shannon Paton and I am entering my third year at SFU. I am an education student working towards a Bachelor of General Studies. I am hoping to apply to the PDP when I complete my degree. I interested in teaching elementary, and will be starting to volunteer this month at Canyon Heights Elementary in a grade one class to get a better idea of what is all about, which I am looking forward too.
I moved to North Vancouver from the Sunshine Coast when I was eighteen and have been working part time a pub while also going to school. I am really looking forward to this class and hope to learn new and interesting things.

  28. Hi Everyone,

My name is Lily. This is my 2nd year at SFU. Currently an Arts student, but will be transferring to Education. As well, I will be minoring in Psychology. My goal is become a grade 3 or 4 teacher in the future. I like to interact with students (especially the younger ones).

My pervious job was a part-time tutor for an after school program where students from K-7 come by after school for extra help. Not only is this strictly a tutoring centre, but we also have time to interact and bond with the students. Some examples would be making arts and crafts with them and sometimes rewarding certain students with prizes and candy for their performance. I’ve actually learned a lot from this job and this definitely gave me the ideas of a classroom environment. I am currently working at The Artona Group at the front desk. This is a Photo studio where we shoot high school and university graduation photos, and also pre-school, elementary and secondary school day photos. This also gave me an opportunity to interact with students.

I really like music. I play the piano as well as the violin, but because I live a busier life style now, I don’t tend to spend much time playing these instruments. As a replacement, I would listen to music. Another hobby of mine is to cook and bake and as well I love to try all kinds of different foods from different cultures.

  29. Hi everyone,
I’m Sarah! I am a brand spanking new PDP student. I have officially been in the programme for two weeks and couldn’t be more excited and more nervous about it! I am in the Indigenous perspectives module studying Secondary in the field of English. I am taking this course to get a few extra education credits that I need for accreditation. More specifically I chose this course because I feel that reflection is such a huge part of the Professional Programme and the professional world of teaching. My one fear is balancing the coursework from both and staying on top of everything. I suppose it will be a true test of my multitasking and organizational skills.
Previously I have studied at Douglas College where I did my Associate of Arts degree in general studies. I then moved up Kamloops where I finished of my Arts degree with a double major in English and History. It was there that I discovered my passion for teaching and deep love of learning.
Through this class I hope to be able to more clearly and concisely express my ideas beliefs and of course reflections. In this sort of scenario I tend to suffer from a bit of a verbal (or in this case written) diarrhea. So please everyone if you find that I am rambling please remind me!
Looking forward to hearing from you all,
    Sarah

  30. Hello Everyone,

My name is Samantha and I currently am an SEA with Surrey School District. I hope to be a teacher one day and am taking this course on route to doing so. I often reflect my on my own behavior and the students I work with on a regular basis. I find that in doing so it allows me to be a better support to my students and it allows me to remain sane. I look forward to discover what this course can teach me in becoming better at introspection.

An interesting note about my self is that I'm a triplet. Yes! I have two brothers and we're all born on halloween. It doesn't get more unique than that. And I also have two older sisters who have recently just married. I look forward to starting this journey with you guys. See you soon!

My name is Alex, I'm currently a 5th year student at SFU. I've been working towards a career in teaching volunteering at schools around the area along with focusing my studies in education to give me a solid creative background for elementary education. It was only last semester that my reflective writing really took off duirng a creative movement class. I hope that this course allows me to further develop those skills and enhance my own learning process.

  33. Greeting and Salutations!

My name is Charlie and I am currently in my fourth year of a BGS-Education Degree with a Double minor in Educational Psych and Learning Disabilities. I hope to enter PDP for Jan 2011.

I work part time for the VSB as a student support worker. I have worked fulltime or part-time for the VSB since 2002. I love my job working with students with special needs but have decided to pursue a teaching degree in order to fully implement the ideas that I’ve been working on. As support staff, I don’t have the authority or liability coverage that a fully certified teacher has, and therefore my hands have been tied on many occasions. I’ve also written and implemented an ESL program for elementary school aged students in Japan. On top of all this, I tutor a young fellow who has autism and has ESL. I’ve worked with him since 2003 and have been delighted to see the progress he’s made. Every day is a new challenge, but we welcome them! Needless to say, with two jobs, school, and a sprinkling of other commitments, organization and time management is key.

As for this course, I think I will be well prepared as my friends and family say that I think about things TOO much and should try living outside of my own noggin once in a while. I love reading, so these short stories will be a nice change from textbooks as I don't have time to read for pleasure much these days. My other passion is for music, either listening, playing or travelling to see live. My dream job would be as a travel/writer reviewer for music festivals.

Anyway, thanks for reading and good luck to all ;-)
